Cozy Pecan Apple Crumble
This apple crumble recipe is a nostalgic favourite in our family, perfect for cozy evenings or a sweet finish to Sunday lunch. With just the right balance of tart apples and a buttery, golden topping, it’s as simple to make as it is delightful to eat. Whether you’re serving it with a dollop of cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, this recipe is bound to become a staple in your home.
TIPS:
Choose the Right Apples: Granny Smith apples are perfect for their tartness, but mixing them with sweeter apples like Pink Lady can add depth (This is what we do).
Customize the Topping: For added crunch, toss in your choice of chopped nuts or a sprinkle of shredded coconut.
Butter Matters: If your topping mixture isn’t wet enough, it won’t be as crunchy. Add more butter if needed.
Get Creative with Spices: Swap or add ground nutmeg, ginger, or cardamom for a unique twist.
Reheating Leftovers: To restore the topping’s crispiness, reheat in the oven rather than the microwave.
Ingredients
For the filling:
6 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup raw granulated sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp plain flour
For the Crumble Topping:
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup plain flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
125g or 1/2 cup melted butter
A pinch of salt
For the Maple Cinnamon Pecans:
1 cup roughly chopped pecans
3 tbsp maple syrup
1/2 tsp cinnamon
pinch of salt
Instructions
Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a medium-sized baking dish or cast iron pan.
Bake pecans: Mix pecans, maple, cinnamon and salt in a bowl until pecans are evenly coated and bake at 180°C (350°F) until golden brown (watch for burning).
Make the Filling: Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice in a large bowl to prevent browning. Add sugar, cinnamon, and flour, mixing until the apples are well coated. Spread the mixture evenly into your prepared baking dish.
Create the Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt & melted butter & mix until the mixture resembles thick coarse crumbs.
Assemble: Sprinkle the crumble mixture generously over the apple layer, ensuring even coverage.
Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes or until the topping is golden and crisp, and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges. Once finished, sprinkle maple & cinnamon pecans over the crumble.
Cool and Serve: Let the crumble cool for 5–10 minutes before serving warm with your choice of whipped cream or ice cream.
There’s nothing quite like a warm apple crumble fresh out of the oven, filling the house with the smell of cinnamon and butter. It’s the kind of dessert that feels timeless, simple, nourishing, and full of love. This is one of those recipes you’ll come back to again and again, and each time, it will feel just as special as the first.
